sub-way-conscious (2020)
//sub-way-conscious
Sub-way-conscious is about the collective subconsciousness that the subway-system is to the city. If the subway-system is a metaphor for an under-the-surface neural network and the trains the energetic connections, what role do individuals play in this system?
At first sight people are sunken in their own thoughts, in silent wordlessness. But insight thoughts, feelings and experiences are rapidly processed as in deep-sleep. Though physically motionless, almost frozen, people are still aware of eachother presence, they are in the same buzzing energetic field. Silently mirroring and copying on one another's behaviour. Yawns passing on from person to person like a breeze, eyes following eachother's paths, quick glances while avoiding eyecontact.
The trains connected by a grid of tunnels, the people close together and at the same time distant from eachother but connected by thinking the same thoughts, processing the same experiences in the world above, sharing the same observations, hopes and believes, fearing the same fears.
This series explores isolated scenes of people in their own thoughts, in their own uniqueness. It looks for frozen moments in this maze of collective subconsciousness.
This is not meant to be a series of streetportraits, they are candid observations. It's about observing subtle clues of uniqueness, of individual expression, both behavorial and visual.
This series is still in progress.
