Urban Dystopia is a series by Berlin-based photographer Jean-Pierre Damen that was shot during 2018.
Urban Dystopia is as much an attempt to document life in the public space as it is a broader attempt to capture the state of humanity, and to reveal the sense of a growingly detached society. Consequently both elements from traditional street photography as well as more abstract photography are used. Whereas traditional street photography often is about establishing a connection with the subject, or capturing human interaction, Urban Dystopia is very much about the preposition that modern society is in a continuous state of detachment, and, as such , shows scenes of desolation and mirrors feelings of emptiness. The project consists of selected analogue images, shot mainly in Berlin and Paris, with sketchy snippet-like stories to complement the imagery. The project is executed in book-form and some images are available as numbered and signed large- and medium-format prints.
